Advanced Driving Grades

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Advanced Drivers' Association [RoADA] have undeniably led the world for several decades in the provision of advanced driving courses that provide a suitable and demanding range of results.

We therefore make no excuse for basing our description of ADA's "Gold," "Silver," and "Bronze" grades very closely indeed on the RoADA definitions, as follows:

GOLD

(Advanced)

This grade is recognized as the highest driving award available to the public. It will be awarded only to the polished, systematic driver, who displays a complete understanding and appropriate application of the principles used in the System of Car Control approach to advanced driving. The candidate will display a confidence and ability throughout the course and the final assessment which leads the examiner to consider that, if given the opportunity, the candidate would have the potential -- with the basics already in place -- to do well on a UK police advanced course. The candidate's performance must be consistent throughout the whole of the assessment and so any lapses will result in a lower grade. Awards of this grade are therefore reserved only for the very best drivers.

SILVER

(Advanced)

This grade will be awarded to drivers who are well above the average. These drivers will produce consistently safe and systematic drives but perhaps without the final polish, flair and smoothness of the Gold driver. They will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the system of car control. Candidates must be able to drive up to the permitted speed limit where it is safe to do so but vary speed according to circumstances and conditions. It must be emphasized that Silver is an extremely high grade and a commendable achievement.

BRONZE

(Defensive)

This grade will be awarded to drivers whose driving performance is significantly above the standard required to pass a state driving test. These drivers will show a basic knowledge of the methodologies described in "Roadcraft" but will lack the ability to apply the system consistently throughout the assessment phase of the course. The drive should be entirely safe, observing traffic signs, responding correctly to hazards and should include use of initial-level advanced driving techniques.

GRADUATE

The "Graduate Driver" award is a recognition -- following suitable training -- that a young or apprehensive driver has acquired a functional insight into defensive driving and is now better able to maintain a reasonable standard of safety.

FAIL

Candidates who fall below the minimum pass will be classified as "fail," but in reality a fail requires a driver either to be unsafe or unwilling to participate.  Anyone who applies themselves enthusiastically to an ADA course will achieve a meaningful result on which further gains may later be based.
