Latest Multi-National VMT Road Death Rates – USA Makes Least Progress 1990-2015

The USA is unique in measuring deaths-by-distance-travelled per 100 million miles, which is referred to as the “Vehicle Miles Traveled” [VMT] rate.  The rest of the international community, on the other hand, use one billion vehicle kilometres [“billion VKT”] for the metric, and that is the case in the following list. (View an easy method to convert the US VMT rate to the international figures.)

Norway has achieved a new, all-time record low rate with a wonderful 2.6, and interestingly the top three countries in these “billion VKT” rates — namely Norway, Sweden and the UK — also finished in identical positions in the 2015 per capita rates, too, something which to my knowledge does not generally happen.  Congratulations to all three!

Sadly, when one views the percentage changes in the rates from all 20 measurable countries, below, it is very clear that the nation that has made by far the least progress in cutting road deaths between 1990-2015 is the USA, with a reduction in the VMT/billionVKT rate of just 45.7% compared to a “best” of 81.8%, by the Republic of Ireland and an average, for all 19 other countries, of 71.2 percent.
